Anybody here remember the staircase at Walong? I remember running up and down that thing several times each day when I was young and crazy....and the knees worked. Photo taken in September 1978.

Are there enough phone poles in the area around Walong to make you happy? Do we need more? Taken September 1979.

I have used that staircase on more than one occasion.I have also hiked to the cross on top of the hill in the middle of the loop. The view is great from up there!

Remember it well. Used to sit on the top landing waiting for trains.

I always wanted to model this side of the tunnel 9; maybe in the afterlife....and this is my post 187. Taken July 3, 1978 adjacent to the signal bridge...almost. Notice the Roman nose lettering on an EMD, as opposed to the Gothic style which seemed more common.

SP SD45 8837 is leading this train, but its so dirty I thought I really messed up the exposure. After noting the SD40 right behind the lead unit is almost as filthy; I saw SP 8350 SD40T-2, the third unit which is a little cleaner, and I felt better. The real reason for this is to post my favorite helper pic from that time period; I can still hear the prime movers in run 8, and the sanders running wide open, the energy level was unbelievable! ...and, without any further banter, here are the helpers! Both taken on July 3, 1978.

I always loved to see the little cement hoppers on the SP, talk about paint and weathering variety for a modeler. So I did tend to take pics of the cars whenever I could afford the film and the processing. I did not really know where to place this photo on this forum, so, since it also has a lot of the details of the upper loop area, it went in here.
Here is a shot of the front of a unit train of these cars that used to go back and forth between Mojave and some distant point via the valley line.Taken at Walong about 1979.

IMO, the Tehachapi and Cajon areas are the two best places for railroad photos!!

My railfan buddies used to always razz me about how often I took pics at the loop, and had that old dead tree (the fav helper shot above as an example) in the picture (not to mention my avatar). I guess it was fate that had he me up at Walong when a crew showed up with chainsaws; I left for Caliente and did not come back until that afternoon, here is what was left... Yet one more old familiar friend gone for good. The reason I liked the tree was two fold; I always liked to tie my pics to a scene when possible, and foreground brush or trees acted like a natural frame. The other reason was, before there were any signs up on that hill, I would have missed the loop turnoff, except that old bent tree was my first landmark for Walong; I remembered it from other pics I had seen. Pic taken March 1979.
