The BNSF has announced that a major track expansion is planned for Tehachapi pass; to be completed by 2013. Here is a map of what changes are being made; better get your pics now if you want things "the way they were". Taken from the Dec 2008 BNSF magazine.

It will be interesting to see what they do with tunnel 10.

To me it will be interesting to see how fast BNSF goes ahead with this work in a down economy. There have been multiple studies done on adding more trackage to the Tehachapi route. John Signor's book Tehachapi comes to mind in showing what plans have been made before and were not acted on.

The Govenator is ready to pony up a huge chunk of coin to this project; to add jobs, customers and improve shipping times through the central valley. You might be surprised, his re-election for a third term will be coming soon, and this looks good to voters. Foamer, Tunnel 10 will be gone, replaced by a big cut and fill I am guessing this will include a huge retaining wall of some sort.

A big cut and fill I can deal with, but a G%& Dam retaining wall?
Sounds like BNSF should have kept the ATSF, calling itself All The S%*##y F@%&*ers.

It seems like some parts of Tehachapi will hard to recognize.I'm glad I had the opportunity to see the pass during the Starlight detour on Sunday and Monday. There was snow on Tehachapi on Monday!

These are from 1984/85ish, sorry for the quality but these images were taken with a disc camera (anyone remember those?) and are 30+ years old, these were taken from atop tunnel 10, enjoy the view before BNSF decided to destroy the mountain
