1. Absolutely no UP content allowed. This means no photos, including the so called SP heritage unit. No UP avatars. Just no UP. Now that I have said that, I find this weird to say....UP content that is ok. Any shot that does have UP content must have SP equipment in the shot. Example, leased or run through UP power. Also, please keep UP patched locomotive photo's to a minimum. Any ex SP units in any other railroads paint is ok. These units were either sold by SP or found not "worthy" to the borg. This is an SP fans forum. And I thank all the fans that have joined. Thom admin

Good! I saw the UP 1996 this morning and it's still ugly, and still an SP phony!

Yeah Shastafan! Having that UP 1996....thing....show up, either in picture or in person, is sort of like having Charlie show up at a Sharon Tate memorial service; just not a proper or welcome thing to have happen.

I second that motion. This forum should be for REAL SP. Send that Borg imposter back to Omaha where it came from!

To paraphrase John Lenon:Imagine no UP.It's easy if you try. ;D Hello gentlemen! New to this forum but not new to RRing. This is an ancient thread but still applies today! It struck a chord with me!
In my wildest dreams, I never imagined that I would be working for "those other guys" the last eight years of my RR career. The move from Illmo to JeffCity in 1983 was bad enough. At least we were running our own trains over the MoP tracks between St.L and KC back then. The BSMFF was called about 5:30 pm. daily and made up as usual in Valley Jct. yard on the ramp, 28 rail. But, instead of heading south toward Dupo, the BSM was, at first, dragged backward through the east end of A&S yard, to head up the approach to McArthur bridge. Soon, a new crossover was installed in the middle of Valley Jct. interlocking to permit westbound business to head up onto the bridge approach directly from Cotton Belt yard.
Used to a flat, river route on the Chester sub, we flew by the seat of our pants on a new foreign railroad with HILLS! First time one of our engineers brought the BSM off of Kirkwood hill, we were up to almost 80 mph before he got 'er slowed down before reaching the tight curve and crossover at Valley Park. Woohoo! We were railroading Brother! The MoP was double-track, CTC to just west of Jeff City at River Jct. Then the Sedalia and River subs split. We had fun running on paper train orders in ABS territory--a first for almost all of us! But, we learned quickly how far we could go to meet the morning or evening Amtraks on their schedule.
The Sedalia sub was a roller coaster ride with several big hills. Our westbound trains did the best they could. The BSM and APW (auto parts west) always had good power; A&S mixed trains, not so much. Eastbound trains ran on the flat River sub--with a 40 mph speed limit in the 1980s. That sub was also train order territory with ABS. We had to be ready to grab orders off the hoop if we had a 'red order board' at Myrick, Miami or Booneville--the same at Sedalia and Pleasant Hill on the Sedalia sub. Then, in the early '90s, the entire Sedalia sub was made CTC. The River sub was made TWC (track warrant control) where train movements were controlled by the dispatcher by radio. That took all the work out of railroading. Those were the good 'ol days--maybe !
We made it past the threat of side-by-side merger with the Santa Fe in the late '80s. Working for the D&RGW wasn't so bad. We joked that the Rio Grande buying the SP/Cotton Belt was like a pissant trying to train an elephant! Then, in 1998, the Southern Pacific was merged into the UP system. That was a shock of all shocks to my system. That summer of '98 was a nightmare! Whole freight trains were lost down in Texas. Trying to get into St.Louis, we could not make 125 miles in twelve hours. And, then we could not get relief and be taken off of our dead trains. The UP's left hand did not know what the right hand was doing. I made TONS of overtime that summer. My record was seventeen hours on duty before being relieved.
The red and gray that I loved was painted over with armour yellow. UP management was no fun to work for! There was no 'legal' way to hurry and get things done. Our incentive to run trains and expedite the business was gone. The whole game plan of the UPRR was to prevent personal injuries (and law suits) even if the trains slowed down or stopped completely. Every new rule slowed things down even more. We had no provision for regular time off from our assignments, but were threatened if we "marked off sick" too often. I am glad I had the opportunity to work for a REAL railroad back in the day. The COTTON BELT was a real railroad! They took care of their own, and the men took care of the railroad! I am not so senile that I can't remember! They probably weren't "the good ol' days" but they were better days !

I've just found this forum, via the Wikipedia article on the Prosperity Special. No UP is my mantra as a UK-based modeller, except for a HALLMARK Sulzer SD45 that makes occasional appearances on our club layout.
