Seeing those photos reminded me of the time when I saw a U50 on a freight and I talked my family into chasing the unit.We followed it from Industry yard to where Valley Blvd.split away from the tracks.

Were you heading east towards Pomona, or west into El Monte? I used to love to cruise Valley Blvd in my '70 Nova, heading east from the 605 and then making the right to follow the line into Pomona and beyond. I too saw a lot of wonderful things out that way.

The last time I saw the U50's or the DD's was when I was working as a delivery driver in Commerce CA. My buddy was working for the SP and he happened to tell me he got called for movement to the harbor. I saved my pick-up's along that route for last and was fortunate (well not really) to see the last two U50's and I forget now how many of the DD's, being taken to the scrapper. That became a rather sad day for me; the last of the really unique SP power was fading fast. I think by then the rare power were the 6 axle U-Boats and maybe the last few Centuries were being run to death; or they may have been deadlined already. A couple of detail shots taken just before the end. I have some cab close ups if anybody is interested; I just have to find them!

Would love to see cab shots! I understand it was cramped.
