;D May 8, 1989, Southern Pacific #4449 and Borg #8444 put on the show of a lifetime over Cajon Pass after the conclusion of 50th Anniversary Ceremonies at LAUPT.

On another site I could only rate this photo a 10 at best. This photo is more than a 10 by a long shot. It's not often a railfan can see two classic locomotives such as these two. Words like fantastic, awesome and incredable aren't strong enough word to discrible these locomotives.
This is at least a super awesome, super fantastic and super incredable photo.

Well Gary, that's a pretty amazing summation and I thank you as always for your remarks. The odds of something like this happening, especially in the 1980s, was pretty amazing in itself. Trust me, I'd be more than happy to upload the race sequence between the #4449/#8444 onto the internet. At the moment though, the footage is still in VHS format.

Herb,
How much footage are you talking about? Have you ever heard of Hobo Ron? He does VHS or 8mm to Digital transfers for folks. mlmp.tripod.com/indexxx.html
Drop him a line, he might just work out a deal with you on the tape if its long enough. With great scenes like the one above, it will sell and sell well!
If my tip works out for you, don't forget to hook me up.

Hello John,
As far as the Cajon Race footage between #4449 and #8444 is concerned, probably only about 5-10 minutes. But I did shoot VHS footage before, during and after the 1989 anniversary event totaling something in the neighborhood of 45 minutes.
Hobo Ron's name does sound a bit familiar, but I haven't had any of my analog footage converted and burned to DVD yet. I'll check it out. Thanks very much for the tip. I may just have to go that route until I'm set up to do my own conversions.
Most definitely John, I'll let you know what's happening. Would you be interested in a VHS dup? Let me know.
Herb

I think I still have one VHS player that works well; I know the one at my train club works. I'm thinking that footage would be very good for when I have docent duty. I would not be opposed to a VHS copy, in fact I'd be very jazzed....perhaps we should do further dealings via PM?

Hey Jerry, how're you doing these days? Started that day at LAUPT, then to Cajon and eventually Bakersfield. Amazing day indeed!

Thanks as always Gary. This image has become a little bittersweet over the years since I took it. While it was a most amazing day of chasing two magnificent 4-8-4s, it also marked the last time, so far, I saw the #4449.

Understood about it being bettersweet. Seeing one 4-8-4 is a treat indeed, but two side by side; super luck may have been involved here. Dam this is a super good catch!!
