It was 35 years ago that the last Cotton Belt train called on Gatesville, TEXAS. The last train ran to Gatesville on November 14, 1972. Two days later on November 16th the Cotton Belt abandoned the line from Lime City to Gatesville. Thanks to railfan Gary Powell who witnessed the event while growing up in Gatesville for remembering this event in Cotton Belt history.

Gatesville line abandonment information from Dave Bernstein via the Cotton Belt in Commerce Symposium in April of this year. Look for Dave's new Espee/Cotton Belt in Texas book coming out some time next year.

Bradley Linda wrote up an account of this event in the local NRHS newsletter from Waco, TX. Bradley interviewed Gary Powell and used some of his photos of the event.

Cotton Belt's 1911-built depot in Gatesville is now used by Coryell County as the Chamber of Commerce. The freight depot used to attach to the left of the building and was torn down. Gatesville was the original Cotton Belt southernmost end point in 1882. In 1910 Cotton Belt took an interest in the Stephenville North and South Texas Railway and a connecting line was soon built from Hamilton, Texas into Gatesville to connect the SN&ST to the rest of the Cotton Belt.

I am looking forward to this book.I know very little about the SSW.I have Joe Strapac's book ,but that only covers motive power. I would like to know more of the general history of the road.
