In the early 1970s you could find both power pool and lease power in TEXAS on the Cotton Belt. This photo shows a Penn Central GP38 leading #343 through Commerce, TEXAS. Terry A. Kirkland photo.

Later in 1972 Cotton Belt leased a number of B&O/C&O GP30s and GP35s. These units were used indiscriminately with the normal Cotton Belt and Southern Pacific power found in TEXAS. In this September 1972 view you can see a C&O GP35 and GP30 laying over at the Commerce, TEXAS engine facility before departing with #17 for Fort Worth later that night.

Here is C&O GP30 3044 engaged in switching out the Cotton Belt yard at Commerce, TEXAS in this September 1972 view. This is the Pine Street crossing next to the depot. The Geep is on the remnant of the old Sherman Branch that was abandoned on September 26, 1953.

Penn Central GP40 #3146 is laying over at the Commerce, Texas engine facility awaiting its next call to duty. It is equalizing some pool power miles this far from its normal pool haunts of Indianapolis and Pine Bluff.

That would've been a sight to see at a MP/SSW crossing. Blue on both lines!
Didn't know SSW was so indiscriminate in it's power usage!

A pair of pool power Chessie GP40-2s prepare to launch northward from Commerce Yard with either #18 or #318 for Pine Bluff. The #18 was out of Ft. Worth and the #318 was out of Dallas. Both were daylight trains at Commerce with #18 preceeding #318 out of Commerce. Terry A. Kirkland photo.
