The BAHOF was a COFC and auto rack train that was a train that came from the pacific rim and was headed for the ports of Europe.
The Asian market place found this to be the least expensive way to ge their products to the European market place.
The train was made up at the Oakland ship yard where the containers were placed on containers cars. Also if autos were in transit they would be placed on auto racks.
The Southern Pacific was choosen more for economic reasons. The espee was also directly able to deliver the train to the ports at Houston that the Santa Fe couldn't do.
Some of the traffic would go to the ports in Africa and South Africa.
This was a very successful train for the Southern Pacific.
It was routed thru the San Joaquin Valley in Central California. It would also that the Palmdale Colton cutoff go head into West Colton for an inspection and crew change. Yuma, Arizona would be the next crew change point.
The train was important enough that it was hurried over the railroad. Railroad employees in the different yards and dispatchers and road crews did every thing the could to keep a watchful eye on the train to help it over the railroad.
This was a true hot shot.
