The JRCIP (James River to City Of Industry Paper) was one of my favorite trains that the Southern Pacific operated. Origannally it was thc CZCIP (Crown Zellerbach to City Of Industry Paper) but Crown Zellerbach later changed its name to James River.
This train would depart from Portland, Oregon taking the Shasta Route into Roseville, California. After having an inspection the train would depart Roseville travelling thru the San Joaquin Valley in central California and thru the Soledad Canyon and San Fernando Valley into Taylor yard in Los Angeles.
After another inspection the train would complete its trip to the City Of Industry.
The James River Corporation makes paper products such as paper towels and toilet paper. We see these items in our homes and places of business.
The train was usually 70 to 80 cars long and heavey. At Sylmar, California it could be seen with as many as eight road units and a nine unit set of helpers. The helpers were cut in at Bakersfield and cut out at Sylmar to get the train over the grades and thru the Antelope Valley and into the San Fernando Valley. The train could weigh as much as 15,000 tons.
I always did enjoy watching this train. A true favorite of mine!
