Terry Kirkland saw four trains 35 years ago today. Train #318 out of Dallas has a couple of escapees from the Bakersfield-Tehachapi Freight Pool. Or maybe that pool was discontinued by this time? Terry saw some U30Cs go through Commerce and there are a couple of photos to prove it.

Terry Kirkland saw seven Cotton Belt trains in Commerce 35 years ago today. By now over the three weeks that Terry's spots have been posted you will have seen that the Winnfield Turn and the Greenville Dodger are sharing motive power.

Terry Kirkland saw five Cotton Belt trains in Commerce 35 years ago today. I have called Terry's spots written as WTN and WTS in his notebook the Winfield Turn. I did a bit of research in the two Employee Timetables I have from back in those days, a 1/1/66 and a 1/1/74 issue. The town of Weaver, the other "W" name is not mentioned in either ETT. Winfield is in both ETTs. The 1966 ETT shows Winfield at milepost 488.54 with a siding capacity of 35 cars. The other interesting thing is that Winfield is within the Yard Limits of Mount Pleasant. The 1972 ETT shows Winfield with the siding being 2384 feet long, but states the car capacity as 8 cars. I don't understand the difference. Yard Limits are not shown in the 1972 ETT for Winfield. My thought is that the WTN had rights to Winfield and would work to that point if necessary before returning to Commerce as the WTS. The bulk of the work for this local train would be in Sulphur Springs.
This is the first notation in 1974 by Terry of foreign power in the form of a N&W GP38. There will be more.

This is what I saw on Wednesday January 24, 1973. Former President Lyndon Johnson had died Monday January 22, 1973 and the whole state of Texas went in to mourning.

Terry Kirkland saw four Cotton Belt trains in Commerce 35 years ago today. The motive power set from the previous day's #17 ping ponged back from Hodge with the foreign N&W unit.

Terry Kirkland saw four Cotton Belt trains in Commerce 35 years ago today. The second section of 343 and the previous day's light 343 suggests a delayed connection.

I went over to Greenville and saw a KCS switcher, a KCS Geep, a KCS westbound train was in town switching around and an MKT train went north after some switching. Then I got back to Commerce in time to see #17 come in.

I started posting this to the Cotton Belt Yahoo Group Wednesday January 28th and was nearly done when some limbs came down and took out the house power at 5:55 am. Power was restored to the house on Wednesday February 4th at 3:45 pm, so I am a few days behind. The DSL line just go hooked up a half hour ago.
This is what I saw 36 years ago in Commerce, Texas. Very interesting power combination on #17. Some of the train orders for this day are posted in the Files section.

Terry handed me two forked sticks with the orders for the detour train. I stood my ground on the cold blustery night as the KCS units throttled up and shouted out of town. The lead man caught his orders and at the end of the train a man in the caboose caught the orders on the other stick. The detour train had likely come up from Pittsburg, Texas through Mt. Pleasant and then on to Commerce before it could get back to L&A rails at Greenville. A Cotton Belt pilot was aboard. The is a great Fred Frailey couple of articles in 1979 Trains magazine detailing some of the derailment troubles that KCS was having at the time.
