Awesome photo,Shastafan! Is that a snowshed the train is coming through,or a tunnel in the final stages of being daylighted?Looks kind of strange.

I an guessing its some short of slide protection or snow shed, the portal in the background looks well weathered...at first glimpse it looked like the end of a truss bridge of some sort. The only thing I am ceratin of is that is a very neat shot...

I've heard the term rockshed more often than snowshed. Mother Nature doesn't seem to dump nearly as much snow on the Cascades as she does in the Sierra, at least in "normal" years.
I really don't know how many rocksheds are on the line, but some I have seen are actually attached to the tunnel portals, like at the west portal of Tunnel 5 (west of Cruzatte) and visible from Hwy. 58.

That is a real nice shot John, you should be proud. You gotta love the sound of a T-Motor climbing the grade in run 8. Donner and the Cascades are hard to beat. Thanks for the memories. Kent in Carmel Valley

People are really begining to gravitate to this board...as far as the pics went, I think it was the decayed looking power and aging infrastructure that really screamed ESPEE, which put Shastafan over the top! I liked both other entries, don't get me wrong, but I could hear and feel that third choice; the power, the smoke and the roar all came through the lens. It might be one of the best modern RR pics I have ever seen.

Thanks again, everybody! What's ironic about the picture is that it's the same train I photographed on Salt Creek Trestle and submitted to the Shasta Route contest Regards, John
