Another very nice looking EMD is the SDP45, here we see SP 3209 heading through Niles Canyon.Taken April of 1978; Copyright © 2008 John Huey.I'll be heading up to Bakersfield tomorrow, a last minute reprieve came my way, thank you Lord! I figured I should post a final pic for those not going; its not the same thing, but its a cool picture.

Very nice. I have had a special attraction to the Niles Canyon line ever since the spring of 1975 when I rode a fantrip on the line from Niles to Tracy. It was a circle trip out of Oakland, running Oakland,Niles,Tracy,Martinez,Oakland.I had only found out about the trip two days earlier, from a notice in the back of a copy of Pacific News. The train consisted of an A-A-B-A-A set of Amtrak painted ex SP FP7s and about 14-15 cars.It had an open platform heavyweight observation on the rear. The train had a full diner serving one item on the menu, caled"Chicken a la Amtrak. It was fried chicken and it was good.It was a great trip!

I only saw an SDP45 once while in Commerce. This Terry Kirkland photo may have been taken that day. It shows the 3205 leading #343 into town.

Regards, John [glow=E0000,2,300] Thank you, that was the only train over that line that day, and we were lucky to catch it. Since I had some time to set up, I looked for a nice spot for my background. Most of my shots are usually rushed, this was an exception.[/glow]

I once rode the Coast Starlight behind a very interesting set of power. On a return trip from Santa Barbara the power was a torpedo boat GP9 SDP45 set.I suppose the lead SDP was replaced in San Jose, and the only available unit was the GP9 with no dynamic brake.

That is cool, wish you had a pic; I'd love to see that.
