In the early '90's SP was gradually changing their code lines from analog to digital. On the Brooklyn Sub that meant there was a combination of equipment, and sometimes one type wouldn't communicate with the other. On 08.29.92 WR-41 (Valley Dispatcher) couldn't get a light on the west switch at Swain (north of Eugene), so a signal maintainer was called. In this case is was "Super Signal" Bruce Jolly (SS-438). Bruce started poking around in the switch relay box, couldn't find anything wrong, then asked the dispatcher to cycle the switch 2 or 3 times. Finally, the dispatcher responded that the switch showed in a lock position. After putting everything back together, the westbound Toledo Hauler could make its pickup, put its train back in one piece, and continue into Eugene. I think Bruce is still with the railroad, but I'm not sure where. He usually worked the Cascade Sub, but when he was the weekend maintainer, the Cascade Sub as well as the lower end of the Brooklyn Sub all belonged to him. Regards, John
