Oh, my buddy Mark was a Conductor for the SP when he pulled the pin after they made him an offer he could not refuse. His favorite lokey was the SD39, for looks, reliability and pulling. When I told him it was a turbocharged SW1500 prime mover that lived within his beauty, you'd think I had hit him with a blivit. So after that, whenever we were railfanning together, I'd say hey there's one of the SD1500's you like, or is it a SW39? It was payback for his razzing me about building nothing but switchers. Good times were had by all! December of 1979, along the 605 through Pico Rivera.

Note the difference in intake and radiator screens. Quite interesting and great shot!

5302 was built in August of 1968, it was EMD's Construction number 34000; 5324 was built in April of 1970 as EMD Const# 35821. They came with a 12 cyl 645 prime-mover, but were turbo'ed and had DC generators. 5302 was rebuilt into a SD40-2M by National RWY Equipment Corp., and now carries UP# 2801 if indeed it is still around. 5324 was last seen on the Indiana Harbor Belt as #3902.
