On 08.18.94 SD70M 9803 certainly was! This was during the NMRA Convention held in Portland, and one of the tours was SP's Brooklyn Yard. I honestly wasn't expecting very much, knowing the railroad's attitude towards railfans. What a surprise. Here we are on a charter bus entering a yard that had been strictly off-limits to anyone. The bus parked near the roundhouse, we got off and we were on our own! No special agent chaperones, nothing. So the almost-new 9803 and 2 others are sitting under the steam-era sand tower just begging to be photographed, and we obliged. I didn't ever think that SP would welcome railfans like they did, but there was even an employee that boarded the bus after we entered the property and explained future plans for the yard (intermodal) and never told us where we could or couldn't go. Kids in a candy store - that was us! Regards, John

Within a couple of weeks after the infamous 9-11 merger, that sand tower was gone. Thanks for the info. I knew it was gone, but had never heard exactly when. Regards, John

I hate to say this, but, I think I just saw a loco that could get me into modeling SP with speed lettering. I never thought that would be possible in any way shape or form, but I like that SD70's looks; nice pic. Maybe its the angle, but it sort of fills an old wish of mine, that SP had bought some F and FP45's.
