On the subject of steam, does any body know the condition of the SP4449? If in good enough shape, might it run again?

You can search the web for all the trips 4449 has taken. 4449 just completed a stint doubleheading with UP 844.
4449 runs just fine.

So I'm guessing that both the Mk5s are the most of one SP class that has been preserved. To see a 786-745 doubleheader...

I once rode behind Pacific 2472 from San Francisco to San Jose. That is a nice engine. It has a really shrp "bark" when starting.Sister engine 2467 is at the Niles Canyon Railway. It would be great to see them double head a fantrip! ;D

Don't be surprised if the 786 never runs again. Isn't it in about a gazillion pieces with the boiler separated from the frame?

4449 is my favorite locomotive. I have never got to ride behind her, but have a few movies on 4449. I did get to go up in the cab at Railfair 99 in Sacramento, CA. Boy what a great day that was!
