Okay, this one is not in pristine condition any longer, but it is very interesting still. It is the class caboose for the rebuild program; originally delivered in the 1400 class as a C-40-4. This was the body style used by Athearn for their baywindow crummy. Too bad they made the roof a little short, but all in all, it is still a nice place to start compared to the alternatives.

The title to this thread is self explanitory, but the first few items were borderline for the "too nice" description. This pic, one I took while heading for Donner, was the one I had in the back of my mind when I named this thread. Here is a freshly painted C-30-6 caboose which had several firsts present; the first time I saw the rose marking, the first time I saw orange painted steps on a SP caboose, and really the first time I ever saw fresh paint on any SP caboose, ever! If memory serves me, there might have been the scent of fresh paint, mixing with pine and creosote.Photo taken in May of 1981.

What is wrong with this car? Well, maybe I had better ask, what is on this car that should not be? (Hint: the first car in this thread has it too, and nobody caught it).

I think this caboose 'thing' was the last straw for me and SP railfanning; I do not do well with radically new changes. It was about the time I created my own ptivate model railroad, and then got into 1:20.3 Colorado Narrow Gauge trains...
