Enzo,
Originally, it was for plywood loading. They stayed that way until the forklifts beat them up too bad. I have seen other big items in those too, like loads of wall board, homasote, OSB and such. Almost always big banded bundles on pallets. Many of these cars were rebuilt from cars that had been in Overnight Service.
As to clean cars, if you knew me, that would be a funny thing to say; I ever weather my newest cars, dullcoat at a minimum and maybe a hint of dust too.
The only dumb action is not asking in the first place, but guessing wrong in a public place, when the answer is at hand; thus, there are no dumb questions.
Ciao

Three boxcars with no graffiti in sight! ;D ;D ;D Graffiti was almost always chalk or grease pencil, and done by the car men or brakemen back then; those were all taken prior to 1981. Plus, unless its UP equipment that gets defaced, I won't waste my time with it; which is why I take so few modern SP car pics.

Nothing too special, just a 40' box car still earning money in 1981; they were getting scarce though...

SP 241242 XM is a B-70-67, seen here at Colton Xing in May of 1981. Intermountain's really neat car is wonderful to use for this class. 1981 © 2008 John Huey Photo

This one was redone in 1977 at Sacramento, a year before the rest of the class was rebuilt into the B-70-1-R class. 1981 © 2008 John Huey Photo

I remember when somebody told me that the first autoparts high cubes came with roofwalks...I said why? Then I saw the remains of said roofwalks on a few cars over the years. Now here is an as delivered car!Ken Garges, 1964 © 2008 John Huey Collection
