Westbound Southern Pacific SD40M-2 #8577 leads its train down the main at Woodford while an eastbound holds in the siding in 1997. I believe this particular unit retains all of its SP markings to this very day in 2006 in San Antonio, TX.

Ah yes, beautiful downtown Woodford, I have spent many a night there under the trees and the stars. Back in the mid to early 80's, had a rather large heard of wild boar rooting about on one particular night; talk about weird sounds when you do not know what you are hearing. The Tehachapi pass has to be my favorite train watching place; well at least outside of the yard in Chama New Mexico. It used to be Pepper Ave in Colton, but that became a hassle too. After the Unfriendly Pacific stole the show, and all the homeland security stuff, its good to keep your "papers" up to date and handy.

Hi John,
Probably one of my favorite stretches of track because the light angles are great all day long if you work at it. Of course, the early to mid 80s was my favorite time period for the SP in the Pass. Then too, I spent much of my youth in and around the Inland Empire, so Cajon is pretty tough to put in second place.

Seems like Woodford was a great area to get photos. I used to hang out at the loop quite often. My friends and I used to camp out between tunnels 9 and 10 with our scanners. We saw some good lookin' trains there.

Herb and Gary, It looks like we are within 4 years of each other; I wonder if we might recognize one another? Do either of you do much modeling, or is just rail fanning? I made more than a few trips up to Cajon too. I used to run around with Joe Shine and Charley Slater quite often back then. I only ask because I went to a club the other day and recognized a fellow SP fan. We had never formally met, but had seen each other once in a while at trackside.

John,
I'm 53 years old and before my amputation hung out most often at the Chatsworth train station. I knew several of the head end crew members, so we used to see each other when they had coast orders.
We might reconize each other. I used to see a gentleman often in the Chatsworth area, by Sears siding at the end of Mason Avenue. He owen(s/ed) an apple orchard in the Tehachapi area.

excellent shot Herb! Woodford was my favorite spot up there. Used to back the car under the tree near Woodford/Tehachapi road, and sit on the foundation of the water tanks. Awesome place!

Hi John,
I turned 55 in April. Grew up in Pasadena/San Marino area, but actually spent more time trackside down in Oceanside where the family had a beach house close to the tracks of the 4th District. I didn't hit Cajon and Tehachapi until the early 1980s.

Only on the SP! GP9's as helpers on a pig train; what will they do next? Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Taken at Walong CA, in May of 1980.

Mighty fine there John. Great shot! Thanks for the kind words Herb, But its just as much my new slide scanner software and Adobe Photoshop as it was me; all these recent shots come from my "distressed" collection. Bad exposures, defects and dirt damage, are all present. I just got old enough to have technology catch up with my mistakes and blunders, and provide tools to correct them. The one above is a good example, it was pretty dark. A storm was coming and it was getting late, but I heard the train on the radio and pushed the Kodachrome too far, trying to get the shot. I'm just glad I can finally share some of my stuff again.

SD45T-2 9364 leads right about 21,000 HP uphill over the famous Tehachapi Loop in September of 1981. For several years, I would spend a week in May and the week around my birthday up in that pass.
Life was darn good!Walong CA on September 17th 1981.
