Lets see your Bloody Nose variation...ie..no nose lettering, worn off long hood lettering, "red" lettering etc. No Speed lettering, as this will be a topic of a future contest. One photo per person, must be taken by you. Have fun! ;D

How long will this contest last; or perhaps better stated, when will it close? 85% of my images are color slides. The scanned prints I have posted thus far are a mixture of things taken when slide film was not available; or parts of my planned B&W roster albums for modeling purposes.
I am still looking at available slide scanners, but I need one that will work well for my extensive B&W and color negative collection too. So I must choose wisely, or I too may drink of that cup of buyers remorse.
Do you care if entries are B&W or color?

It doesn't matter if B&W or color. I usually run the contest until things slow down. We really don't get much participation with the contest's. Just a few of us regulars.

[glow=red,11,300] I looked through my prints, and saw a bunch of possibilities, but this Cotton Belt unit seemed to be my most differently marked unit.
Based on what you wrote for the parameters of this contest, I'll enter this picture and see how well it does against the others.
Okay gang, lets see what you got....[/glow] I was in the middle of posting this image when the wingless wonder (8012) above appeared, pretty nice catch I must admit...its better exposed than my badly fading satin paper print.
My Pictures Info: SSW GP35 6515 Circa 9/1978, the pre 1965 lettering and handrail treatment are showing through. I'm guessing that the yellow lettering was primer of some sorts. I do not recall SSW using anything but SP lettering gray on their lettering schemes. But it is a one of a kind anomoly. Well, thats not true either, I saw a couple of SSW GP30's doing this sort of thing around the same time period.
This was a Kodachrome slide, I had made into a print; I know the slide is about someplace!

Southern Pacific SD45 #7489 leads an eastbound mixed freight down from Hiland on the Palmdale Colton Cutoff in Cajon Pass in 1990.

Nice one Huskerherb, I swear that ever since SP dropped the Black Widow paint scheme, they have found more and more ways to make their units look worse, and that got doubled each decade until they vanished on 9/11. I bet the EPA has something to do with changing a glue formula on stickers in this one. Heck, I grew up chewing on lead based paint chips with the best of them, and I'm just fine....well at least I am able function to a point.

Thanks John for your insightful comments. Deferred maintenance became a staple practice much to the dismay of all of us photographers. But it did give their units a certain amount of character! There was nothing like watching and listening to the headend and midtrain helpers on the loaded Oil Cans over Tehachapi.
I am still in the graphics industry after almost 25 years. I can tell you that between the heat from the prime mover and probably slapping the SP nose decals on over oil and dirt, the decals never had a chance!

The photo contests aren't easy choices. That's partly what's so good about them.

I had rather hoped for a little more competition this time around, I figured with the poor state of SP equipment in its last years of life, there would have a been a few more entries in this category. I miss my ESPEE

B39-8 8012. She has no feathers on her wings. Unknown why the repaint. The wingless bloody nose SP8012 was a wreck repair/partial repaint as evident by the replacement plow and repainted nose, front cab, pilot and steps. There are some funky metal tabs welded on to side sill of the steps. Aside from the missing "feather lines" that SP replacement plow, which looks a lot like the MK ones supplied in the SD40M-2 rebuilds, is the big oddball detail- maybe the only one I've ever seen on an SP B39-8E/SSW B40-8 (aside form the MU doorless "Tyco" plows that the UP put on many of them post-merger).
