Always, from day one in the Tehachapi's, the SD45 was my favorite looking EMD. The first time I ever saw one up close, was in the cut west of tunnel 9 at Walong. They went by in run 8 and I can still feel it, hear it, smell it and even taste it; they permeated my entire being.

Hey Espeelover, I'm with you. I used to see them up on Donner when I lived in Grass Valley. Nothing like 4 or 5 on the point coming around a sharp curve in run 8 and going about 20 mph. I also loved the hefty look of them. One of my favorite model engines on my layout. SP ROCKS!!!!!

The SD45 is my favorite second generation diesel.I first saw SD 45s along Valley Blvd.east of the 605 freeway. It was a four unit set consisting of SP,EMD demo,EMD demo, SP.Seeing those demos was a real surprise.I rode behind an SD45 once. It was a helper unit ahead of 5 F units on a fantrip over Donner Pass.I also got a cab ride on SP SD 45 9011,while it was cutting crossings preparing for a long wait in El Monte.

Now this is how a SD45 should look! Bealville in 1978. I wish I knew then what I know now...
