Railfans in Oregon's Willamette Valley are pretty lucky in that it's possible to see quite a selection of ex-SP locomotives. The various shortlines in the area have a variety to choose from. Everything from GP9's to SD45's and in between. The picture shows the Portland & Western "Westsider" (Albany-McMinnville) crossing the UP main onto the Toledo Branch. The SD9E's are privately owned and leased to the railroad. It seems a bit odd that this scene was captured on 05.28.07. John

Nice catch!! When they were rebuilt in the 80's, SP hoped they would get another 10yrs of service out of them. Long live the Sacramento Workforces efforts!!

John Thanks for the photo. I downloaded a copy and put it into my weathering folder. I like those shine reflecting stickers. I wonder if the company ever will paint the engines. It would be nice to see them in a type of Black Widow paint.

That is one beautiful looking engine, the SD9 is one of my favorite locos and when in SP Blackwidow dress, it's unbeatable. Thanks for sharing the photo with us pnwtrains
Cheers, Simon

I totally forgot some pictures taken on 06.29 of the 5399 working on the Albany & Eastern (on film no less!). These were all taken at the south end of the Portland & Western's yard in Albany while it was getting to leave for Lebanon. Regards, John The other Gyralight in this picture is the Portland & Western's "Albany Switcher," an ex-SP SD7R (1530).
