Southern Pacific GS-4 "Daylight", running as X4449, eases eastbound at Surf along the California coastline to Los Angeles to take part in filming sequences for the movie "Tough Guys" in 1986.

Awesome shot Herb!! There just seems to be something about the coast that brings out a better photo. Thanks Gary! You just can't separate the Daylight from the coast. Now if UP would only relax its edic about not allowing predecessor power to run on its rails. The #4449 should be allowed to run where it belongs! Today, March 21, is the 71st anniversary of the inaugural run of the Coast Daylight.

Herb, this is one reason why I was sad when the SP was merged into the UP. Having the 4449 and her rolling stock behind her brought out the best of the line she was running on.

Right you are Gary. It's a shame that SP could no longer maintain operational profitability.

It would be great to see 4449 on the Coast Line pulling a solid set of Daylight painted cars! ;D

It would be great to see 4449 on the Coast Line pulling a solid set of Daylight painted cars! ;D As much as I'd like to see that happen again, the sure thing is to buy the World's Fair Daylight video from 1984 and enjoy it over and over again! I shot video of 4449's trip down the Coast Line in 1989 for LAUPT's 50th Anniversary Celebration. That's what I enjoy watching over and over again!
