What kind of finish was applied to the non-lagged hot areas of an Espee steam loco's firebox and smoke box? Was it actually some kind of heat resistant metallic paint or simply a gray color? Thanks.

This is a very good question. I have always believed that the smoke box sides, and portions of the fire box were not painted. Now in builder photos of GS engines, it appears to be slightly glossy especially the smoke box. I think that these areas are painted from the plant, then after some time being in service, the paint is burned off. Some photos of GS's show the smoke box side's with slight rust streaks and the dull grayish color.

Hmm. Gotcha there, didn't I (finally!) Anyway, your guess sounds reasonable enough, but I'd suppose that the areas of burned off paint would soon oxidize. In the Nav, down in the boiler rooms, all the unlagged steam lines and valves were painted a supposedly heat-resistant bright aluminum, but then there was always an unlimited supply of us low-ranking pukes to chip and repaint any blistered surfaces.

I don't think there was any need to paint the interior.

I don't think there was any need to paint the interior. It's said in the navy, that if it don't move, PAINT IT! ;D

On all steam locomotives I have helped rebuild the smokebox and firebox were 'painted' with Graphite. Graphite itself has a silvery gray color and can be applied directly without adding any color. In the early 1990's while working on NKP 765, silver was added to the Graphite to lighten up the color. With added color or not, Graphite 'paints' on easily. It is best to keep it thin, as a thick coating can crack, or break off when it gets hot.
