Cotton Belt GP60 #9644 heads up eight locomotives on this westbound freight as it passes through Bena in Tehachapi Pass on UP's Mojave Subdivision in July 1999.

Great shot. Looks like the fourth unit is a Kodachrome, and the last two appear to be UP engines.

Thanks espeefoamer. I think you're right about the kodachrome and UP units in the consist. Heck, in 1999 I was glad to see SP/SSW units on the point.

Thanks very much Gary. Good old Fujichrome holds up well. The reason for me being in the Pass that day was due to the return of former ATSF #3751 from Sacramento's Railfair '99. It was practically sundown when she finally made it through, but well worth it!

I'll bet it was well worth the wait. Anytime you can see a steam locomotive now days, it's always worth waiting for.

Definitely worth the wait, and wait some more. A very nice long day of railfanning topped off by chasing the #3751 across the desert from Mojave to Barstow after midnight with no one else around. Just listening to steam whistles and side rods.

Only thing better would have been if I had made an audio recording of all those great sound effects.
