Here's a closeup of assorted classic Southern Pacific power basking in the afternoon sun at the Townsend and 7th Street Diesel Facility in downtown San Francisco in 1981.

Thanks so much Gary. I'm glad I had the opportunity to shoot in the Bay Area back in the 1980s. That's where I caught the SP bug.

Great stuff Herb!! I have never been there. On the right of the fence is a public street?

Thanks Thom. Apparently not alot has changed in some 25+ years since taking that photo. I just had to visit this area because of my passion for the Daylights that used to pass by going to and from the terminal at 3rd and Townsend.
Yes, that's 7th Street to the right which is, as far as I know, still a public street.

Herb, I think I would have lived there had I been in the area. The closest I've been to an area like that has been at West Colton, Beaumont Hill, Cajon Pass and Tehachapi. Lotsa traffic in those areas.

Having looked at countless photos and hours of video, I can only imagine the energy in the air during the steam era in downtown San Francisco.

Massive amounts of enegery there at that time.
The closest to that amount of energy now days is probably at West Colton.
