Southern Pacific GS-4 "Daylight" #4449 is spotted on LAUPT's Track #5 after a busy day's run to Los Angeles pulling the World's Fair Daylight excursion train on May 12, 1984.

Thanks Thom and Gary. Always appreciate your fine comments. Actually, this is a scan from a transparency that has held up well. Guess I should have entered this in the contest.

Thank you espeefoamer. I appreciate your comments. Thankfully, I had many opportunities to shoot the SP over 15 years, when SP was SP! As for the #4449, she needs to make another run to the Golden State where she was designed to run.

4449 needs to pull another all Daylight train over the Loop. This was home territory for her!

Getting her down here on the BNSF and then running on UP trackage rights over the Loop might be a consideration to ponder. Would UP go for that or would it just result in a flat-out rejection? Might have to paint her in all-black again!

She would still look great rounding the Loop, even in black! ;D

Nice shots!
Pictures don't do much for me of the 4449 anymore, I've seen it in person 5 or 6 times.

Great shot Herb. I consider the GS4 Daylight locomotive, to be the most beautiful steam loco ever built in the USA. It's my favorite steam loco.

Actually, home territory for the #4449 was on the coast route up until the second order of GS-4s and the GS-5s arrived on the property. She was then reassigned to the Golden State/Sunset Route and was later reassigned to the coast in the early 1950s until the premier trains like the Coast Daylight under steam were replaced by diesel power on 1/7/55. She wasn't assigned to the Valley until 1956 and was then retired in 1957.
The trouble now is, UP holds all the cards for passage over the Loop. Not the case of course in 1984, '86 and '89.

How true it is that UP holds all the cards.
Thanks for the history lesson Herb.
