Westbound Southern Pacific SD40R #7374 leads a manifest freight around Walong's main track at Tehachapi Loop in 1984.

Great shot Herb! I miss those evenings at the Loop. By the way, is that your ride in the back ground?

Thanks Thom! Yes, evenings around the Loop then were pretty special.
Yes, that was my first railfanning vehicle. Lots of power but a gashog. Olds Delta 88 Royale! I even chased the #4449 with that car in 1984 from Tulare to LAUPT. What a day that was.

Right you are Gary. SP knew how to pose for pictures!
Thom, they should have marked that as a reserved spot. As I recall that spot could have used a little grading to be level.

Herb and Thom you're both right.
SP did know how to pose for photo ops.
That spot were Herb parked could have used some grading.

Espeefoamer, alot of us camped out there. It was so nice, back in the day, that we could see trains of the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific at Walong siding.
In a way, the valley mountain dispatcher was my hero.

One of the trains I enjoyed watching take on the loop was the loaded oil cans. That was such a heavey train (!0,000+ tons) that helpers were a must. Heck, I even saw a Santa Fe train with mid train helpers.
