I am looking for a source of information about the SP operations in the Colestin - Ashland area of southern Oregon in the time frame of 1905-1910. My grandmother was being courted by my Grandfather who worked a a conductor, brakeman for the SP during this time. She made trips back and forth to visit with or be with him on his run over the Siskiyou mountains. I think that he worked with helper engines to get the freights over the hump between Oregon and CA. I have her diary from that time when she was 18 years old and would like to know about how the SP worked that area in the early 1900s. My dad was born in 1910 and when he was alive he took me to see Colestin and now it is a wide spot in a almost dirt road. I believe that the SP rerouted thier tracks after 1910. My guess would be when the new highway was put in during the 1950s. Any information or direction to other webb sites would be appreciated. I have my Granddad's RR hat complete with metal badges for Trainman, S.P. Freight Conductor and Brakeman, for Texas and Pacific as well as for brakeman for that uder Pacific. My grandfather worked the RR all over the country as near as I can tell. He was injured in a coupling accident and was in the hospital for a long time as they reset a broken leg and had to break it again to make it right. My dad quit college in SF and brought him back from Florida and ended up wrenching on Cheys in Ashland during the depression so thay could eat. I would like to find out more about the RR life in that area I mentioned so I can preserve this information for my ancestors. I am an 79 years old and trying to put together a part om my family history for my grand kids and great grandkids.
I also have his personal logs from that time frame and accounts of an incident that occurred that he was disaplined for.
Any help or information would be very much appreciated and would be will to share what I have with others who might be interested.
