For me, all one has to do is mention the word Daylight. Although, in freight terms since I frequented Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Pass in SP days, their SD45s/40T-2s/45T-2s were pretty awesome.

RS32 is my favorite. But, anything ALCO turns my salivary glands on....

What railfan forum, period?
I could approach this question two ways. Out of my favorite locomotives, what's the highest one on the list that SP had? or What's the most perfectly SP locomotive?
The GS-series Daylights are too easy. Besides, I don't generally like streamlined steam. So how about the Warbaby GS-series and the AC-9s?
I love GP60s, but even though SP/SSW had the most of them, they somehow aren't my favorite SPs. In this context, I like B40-8s more.
SD7/9s would probably have to be my overall favorites. They're not large, but they have a chunky look that makes them seem strong anyway. SP light packages always looked best on high noses.
In a different vein, the ML-4000 cabs were never common, but they say SP as much as tunnel motors do. They're the most brutish cab units I've ever seen, and I like their oddity status. The GP40Xs, whereas, are quite handsome. Okay, SD45s are handsome, too, but everybody had them.
The SP engines I like least have to be SD70Ms, C44-9Ws and AC4400CWs. They just don't feel like SP anymore.

It would have to be a Three unit set of Alco PA's in an a-b-a set and of course in "Daylight" paint. Second place goes to the GE U-boats U-30-C and U-33-C.

Somebody raised the favorite steam engine specter. The Mt-4 or 5, followed by the SP-3 4-10-2's, any later AC's (10, 11 & 12), an Mk-5, F-5, and I have this little TW-8 that I use for a local switcher, and it works well. TW-8 2919, a Westside Model with a new can motor, DCC and sound; even a firebox flicker bulb and a working backup tender light.

I love SD70m's best, but tunnel motors are the classic modern Espee loco, they are awesome too.

SD39 is my first choice, just something about them, don't get me wrong the T-2's and SD45's were great but you very seldom saw a train that didn't have one in its consist, when the 39's came to Oxnard it was a treat to catch one, my second would be the SDP45's, never saw them in their commute duties but they'd make it down to Oxnard on occasional weekends, even the GP40P-2's, it was always nice to catch something uncommon, as for switchers, the SW1200's with the big light clusters on each end and second would be the SW1500's, they were everywhere but the cruds had a brutish look about them

Diesel-era would be a choice between the SD45, especially with the full lighting package and L-shaped windscreen, and the Krauss-Maffei Series locos. The GP40X's get an honourable mention.
Steam-era has to be the Southern Pacific-type; this despite their having a Gresley-esque valve gear (I'm an L.M.S. fan rather than an L.N.E.R. one).
