On a beautiful spring day, a Southern Pacific westbound freight led by SD70M #9808 drifts downgrade through Rowen in Tehachapi Pass in April 1995.

I had stopped train watching Class 1 railroads right about the time the caboose went away. So when the speed lettering showed up I never got too impressed, just figured it was another coffin nail. I was in my own business, and working a full time job...no time free anyway! Well, I guess I never took any speed lettering pictures until it was too late; I was in a new marriage with all that goes along with it; plus was really into narrow gauge in 1995...so below is my one speed lettered unit...I hope its companions won't make anybody ill ;D Taken 04/09/2005 where the tracks split up...

Those BNSF units won"t make me ill,but the speed lettering blocked out with black paint just might.

Now you know how I feel when I see units without the traditional or original lighting. Depressing to say the least.

SD40T-2 working in AL in 2006. Behind her, several other ex-SP units that now wear all black paint jobs. 5387 works under a different banner now, but at least she still wears the colors of a much better time.
