When these came back from Texas, they were almost done in, they leaked like my '67 Chevy.
I gave them a nickname of Houston Oilers; well some locals thought it was funny at least. May of 1978.

 Remember the footbridge over Taylor? This was my first time going up there, and I was scared I'd get in trouble. I soon learned that as long as you were cool, you could spend a lot of time up there. Lets see what is in this shot besides the neat power that has a DD35 at the far end. I see a block of PFE cars, an un-enclosed auto rack, roofwalks on some of the PFE reefers still, and some cabooses over in the shadows. Another something never to be seen again! Taken in April of 1977; with the 126 camera I kept in my truck. |

Here we see SP "super switcher" C630 3140, these had the transition removed for low speed operations. 3140 was destined to be the last C630 on the SP's property. Taken November of 1978

It was mid 1972 when the final decision came down to turn the small fleet of SP 6 axle Centuries into what would become known as, Super Switchers. The work would be done at the Houston Shops and the first unit, renumbered 3140, was out shopped in January of 1973. The only physical change, other than renumbering, was the removal of the pilot plows; the other changes were all electrical and involved disconnecting the dynamic brakes and eliminating the transition steps to the higher speed range. The units pictured here are seen working their little hearts out on smoky October afternoon in 1978. The two Century "Super Switchers" are putting a train together; one that will head for Indio and points east in a few hours. They have taken the power and half the train from one track, and coupled to the rear portion. Now they are shoving the entire train back into the clear.
