Of course what SP forum could do without the favorite loco thread? Mine is Espee's cadillac of the Northwest, the SD9. Since I am modeling 1980's SP, I like the looks of the SD9E with paper airfilter, umbrella behind the cab and light packages in all sorts. Nothing beats a quartet (or more) of SD9's with a lumber drag from Oregon. My favorite book, SP Oregon Division has some great shots of the SD9's. www.pbase.com/reneknoop/image/49865070 [/img] Regards, René

Now, for me there are several era specific choices....and those have road and yard divisions. I suppose that since I like switching so much, and it appeared in both Tiger Stripe and Bloody Nose, I'd have to say the Alco S-6; if I had to pick just one.
On the other hand, my favorite diesel road engine of all time was the too ugly for it's own good U50. The diesel era's answer to the AC-10. Speaking of steam are power; the MK-5 was awful pretty, as was the F-5...how do I pick just one steam or diesel....the Mountains in the half Daylight...Alco PA's in Daylight...come on?!? It's like saying which kid I like best, and they are all watching me.
Best sounding...the U33-C while starting a heavy train...but, in run 8...anything with a normally aspirated 567...caddie's were the best though. Most fun to watch....the Houston Oilers; the Centuries when they came back and worked at West Colton....

I'd have to say the RS32s, GP40-2s, GP40Xs, SD38-2s, SD40T-2s, RSD15s, and MK5000Cs are my favorite Espee diesel power.
And the Mk-5 2-8-2s, C-9 2-8-0s, S-class 0-6-0s, Mt-1 4-8-2s (the Mt-4s and Mt-5s just look weird with partial streamlining), GS-1, -4, and -8 4-8-4s, and the SP-1, -2, -3 4-10-2s for un-articulated steam power.

I have four favorites. They are the SD40-2, SD45, SD40T-2 and SD45T-2.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the U-50's and the Krauts. Ooops, that wasn't PC...

Are you talking about those Kraus-Maffei diesel-hydraulic units?

Steam: MT and SP classes.
Diesel passenger: E2 (partly SP) and PA
Diesel freight: RSD5, 8300 class SD40T-2, original West Colton hump switchers (SD38-2/ALCO slug/SD38-2), and first generation K-Ms.

My favorite SP diesel is the FP7.My very favorite unit is the 6449 since I got a cab ride on that engine on a fan trip in 1973.

SD39 they were great pullers when they were maintained.with there 12-645 these units had a sound all there own. When they were in the TeBak pool in the early 70's you could pick them out ,sound wise clear down at Woodford when in run 8.To me these units would have done great on the Oregon Div but SP being always power short these versital SD39s would never find out.

For me, all one has to do is mention the word Daylight. Although, in freight terms since I frequented Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Pass in SP days, their SD45s/40T-2s/45T-2s were pretty awesome.
